Ills of drug addiction
What is drug treatment? Some people would say it is the treatment process for individuals that suffer from the ills of drug addiction. Other people would say that drug treatment is a lifesaver. They would all be right. Drug treatment has been responsible for guiding people back to sobriety for many, many years. Drug treatment could actually be the only saving grace of people with addictions for a few reasons. Trust me, if it weren’t for drug treatment I, myself, would probably not be here. I used to do the damned thing. That’s what we used to call it when we’d smoke rock. For those that don’t know, rock is crack. I used to smoke it all the time with my so called friends back in the day. It was what we did back then. We used to think it was so cool until people started having problems. I was one of those people. I got so hooked on that crap that it was no longer just a social thing with my buds. I actually needed to get high off of that shit. By the time I discovered drug treatment I was almost too far gone. But they brought me back and that’s all that counts.

My dad had a real big problem with his gambling addiction back in the day. I know what you’re thinking: gambling addiction? That’s right, a gambling addiction. Some people call it the hidden illness because there are never any visible physical symptoms. The guys at the treatment center said that Dad was what they call an action gambler. There are two ways that people can suffer from gambling addiction. A gambling addict can either be an action gambler or an escape gambler. The action gambler is addicted to the rush gotten from the risk-taking of gambling. An escape gambler is a person who gambles to block out something in their life that is discomforting. For an escape gambler the gambling comes second to the numbing effect of the action itself. Dad was an action gambler. He just loved the rush of putting everything on the line and either winning it all or losing it. It was quite an ordeal getting help for my dad. Since gambling addiction is called the hidden illness my dad didn’t even know that he was in trouble. When he finally got the message that he wasn’t all good, he agreed to go get treatment and that’s what we did. Now Dad is back to being the same old Dad. These days he only bets on how long it will take the pizza guy to show up.

Okay, so maybe an intervention ain’t the best way to get someone to clean up their act, but I will say that it’s a great way to get their attention. It got mine. It was a good thing too. I was way too far gone for anything else to have worked. That’s just how it was. My entire time addicted to drugs had sent into the darkest recesses of hell on earth and no matter how hard anyone tried I couldn’t get out. My family tried everything. They tried talking to me. They tried reasoning with me. Every effort that was made smashed soundly into the thickest of brick walls. When I try to imagine what that was like for them it makes me sad. Here I was making the greatest attempt to destroy myself and I was completely oblivious to the people who loved me and cared about me. By the time they got around to staging the intervention I was almost gone. The good thing is that there last attempt at saving my wretched soul actually worked and things turned around one hundred percent. So, yes, I am living proof that interventions work and if you’re thinking about staging one to save a loved one, it may be the best thing you could do.
